China sees a quicker surge in power usage in September

CHINA'S power consumption in September continued to rise even more quickly, according to the country's National Energy Administration yesterday.

Power consumption, viewed by some experts as a key measure of industrial activity, in September rose 10.24 percent from the same month last year to 322.41 billion kilowatt-hours. The rate was 2 percentage points up from that of August.

It is the first time in 16 months that China has posted double-digit growth in power consumption, a further indication of recovery in demand spurred by the government's economic stimulus measures.

Accumulative power consumption in the first nine months of this year topped 2.66 trillion kwh, an increase of only 1.4 percent over the same period last year. Some of the moderation in power use could stem from efforts to improve China's energy efficiency.

In the first three quarters, power consumption of the primary industry which covers agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery, powered 6.35 percent from a year earlier to 72.5 billion kwh.

The secondary industry, including mining, manufacturing, building and construction sectors, consumed 1.95 trillion kwh, a drop of 1.67 percent over the same period last year.

The service sector consumed 293.5 billion kwh in thae first three quarters, up 11.26 percent year on year.
