China to cap coal production by 2015

CHINA plans to cap coal production at around 3.9 billion tons by 2015, according to a five year industry plan released today, as the government restricts output to curb pollution and reduce its reliance on the fuel.

That would mean an 11 percent growth from last year's production of 3.52 billion tons. Output had soared 38 percent in the five years through 2010.

Meanwhile, China aims to add new production capacity of 750 million tons per year by 2015, bringing the total to 4.1 billion tons a year, according to the plan released by the National Development and Reform Commission, the top planning agency.

China will also encourage coal imports, especially in coastal areas, and support companies to buy coal assets overseas, the plan said.

Coal as a proportion of China's primary energy mix will fall significantly over the five years though demand will continue to rise amid industrialization and urbanization, the industry plan said.

It said it would be "appropriate" for China to cap coal consumption at 3.9 billion tons by 2015.
