City set to have energy surplus

SHANGHAI shouldn't face the prospect of energy shortages this year as new capacity is coming on-stream, Vice Mayor Ai Baojun said today.
City power capacity will be near 30 million kilowatts - mainly thanks to new hydroelectric power from dams on Jinsha River in southwestern China, Ai told an annual energy working conference today.
This year's peak power load is estimated at 27.5m KW, said Ai.
Natural gas supplies will exceed 7 billion cubic meters.
This is deemed sufficient because no new gas-fired power plants are scheduled to go into operation this year.
Moreover, gas demand won't rise sharply among key industrial users due to economic restructuring.
"It's something that never happened to Shanghai before, for both electricity and natural gas to enjoy a small surplus," Ai said.
"But this is not to say we can relax," cautioned the vice mayor.
In the long term, the balance in Shanghai's energy supply and demand is still fragile.
