Former oil exec not being investigated

China Oil and Gas Group Ltd, a joint venture partner with PetroChina Co, denied a media report that a former executive was being investigated as part of an unfolding graft probe into China’s largest oil company.

Su Shifeng, former president of China City Natural Gas Co, was detained by the authorities in relation to a widening probe into PetroChina, the 21st Century Business Herald reported yesterday.

“After verification, Mr Su is having his normal retirement life and the company has confirmed that such report is inconsistent with the facts,” China Oil and Gas said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange yesterday following a temporary halt in the trading of its shares.

Shares resumed trading in the afternoon and closed flat.

China City Natural Gas is China Oil and Gas’ JV subsidiary with Kunlun Energy Ltd, a unit of PetroChina. China Oil and Gas is a city piped-gas distributor in China and has relied heavily on the venture to grow its natural gas distribution business. Su was also the former head of PetroChina’s pipeline bureau.

Chinese authorities earlier this month said Jiang Jiemin, former chairman of PetroChina and its state-owned parent China National Petroleum Corp, was being investigated for suspected “severe disciplinary violations,” a phrase typically referring to corruption.

His downfall follows official notices that four former colleagues at PetroChina and CNPC were being investigated.
