'Hybrid' gasification
ANGLO-DUTCH energy giant Shell has signed a deal with Shanghai-based Wison Engineering Ltd to jointly develop a "hybrid" gasification technology demonstration plant in China, under a cooperation expected to expand the cleaner use of the nation's coal resources.
Michiel Mak, vice president for gasification at Shell, said in a statement yesterday that hybrid gasification offers a solution at moderate costs for its customers to efficiently upgrade low-cost feedstock such as coal to more valuable products.
The plant is expected to further expand the market for syngas - the main product of the gasification process - into the chemicals, hydrogen and fertilizer industries, according to Shell.
The cooperation banks on Shell's expertise in coal gasification technology and Wison's experience in project design and engineering.
