CHINA may reduce its energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product by 5 percent this year, but it will be difficult to meet its target of 20 percent by next year, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said yesterday. In the first half of this year, energy consumption per unit of GDP was down 3.35 percent, and the emissions of sulfur dioxide and COD were down 5.4 percent and 2.46 percent respectively.
