Massive spending to save energy

CHINA will spend 2.37 trillion yuan (US$375 billion) on major energy-saving projects from 2011 to 2015 under a blueprint outlined by the National Development and Reform Commission.

The country will invest 982 billion yuan in energy conservation and set aside 816 billion yuan toward reducing pollution, the top economic planner said in a statement on its website yesterday.

Another 568 billion yuan will be pumped back into the circular economy, which involves a shift from using fossil fuels to consumption of renewable energy, the NDRC added.

The three major energy-saving tasks, outlined in the blueprint as an important component of China's emission-cutting efforts under the 12th Five-Year Plan, include optimizing industrial restructuring, boosting energy efficiency and cutting major pollution emissions.

China plans to cut energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (US$1,587) of gross domestic product by 16 percent by 2015. The total pollutant emissions are expected to decline by 8 to 10 percent.
