Moves for gas price hike stymied

PRICE authorities in several provinces across China have put a brake on plans to raise natural gas prices after the central government called for stable prices.

Anhui Province will refrain from price hikes before the end of March next year while Hebei Province won't raise gas rates until the end of the year. Other provinces which halted price increase plans include Guangdong, Jiangsu and Henan, according to China National Radio.

The Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission said last week it won't consider any new price adjustment given the rising pressure of inflation.

China's Consumer Price Index rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October, prompting the government to announce a range of measures to ensure adequate supplies of coal, power, oil, coal and grain, among other goods.

China's gas market is getting tight as the peak winter demand season approaches. PetroChina, among the few gas suppliers in China, has asked the government to speed up price reforms as importers typically buy at higher international rates and sell at lower regulated prices.
