Natural gas for winter heating encouraged

CHINA will promote the use of natural gas in winter heating by increasing supply and upgrading household devices as part of the country’s efforts to battle worsening air quality and global climate change.
A notice on the National Energy Administration’s website yesterday said the past winter has seen China facing increased challenges in meeting the needs of industrial and civil users in heating, while the aging storage facilities were not able to cope with supply during the peak period of gas use.
China will also step up replacing the coal-burnt furnaces with gas-heating facilities. The government will further improve the pricing mechanism to promote the use of natural gas.
The NEA paid special attention to Beijing and Tianjin as well as Hebei Province because they are arguably China’s worst smog-affected region. The government in recent years has imposed tougher standards on environment protection and set up energy consumption goals annually up to 2030.
In November, China and the US issued a joint statement on climate change to cut greenhouse gas emissions. In the statement, China pledged it will raise the share of non-fossil fuels in its primary energy consumption to around 20 percent by 2030.
Premier Li Keqiang said earlier this year that China will endeavor to cut the proportion of fossil fuel, especially coal, in energy consumption.
