Novelis taps China's thirst for aluminum sheet

Aluminum products maker Novelis Inc expects China's demand for aluminum sheet to surge as the country's automakers strive for improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
Novelis, the world's largest producer of aluminum sheet products to create vehicle structures and body panels, last week broke ground on its first aluminum manufacturing plant in China in response to customer demand.
The US$100-million plant in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province has a designed output capacity of 120,000 metric tons of aluminum sheet a year when operation starts in late 2014.
"Our close relationships with world-class automakers are driving our long-term strategy to support their production expansions around the world. We expect China's demand for automotive aluminum sheet to exceed the 25 percent compound annual growth rate expected worldwide in the next five years," said James Liu, managing director for Novelis China.
Novelis is the US unit of India's largest aluminum producer Hindalco Industries Ltd.
