Nuke plant to get 2 reactors in 1st phase
CHINA Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Co, or CGNPC, plans to build two reactors of 1,000 megawatts each in the first phase of the Lufeng nuclear power plant in south China's Guangdong Province.
The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, has approved the company to conduct early-stage study on the project's first phase, CGNPC said in a statement.
The Lufeng plant has a designed capacity for six 1,000MW reactors.
CGNPC said with the latest two units, it now has 25 reactors with a total capacity of more than 28,000MW that have got either initial approval or final approval from the NDRC.
China is accelerating the construction of nuclear plants to cut reliance on polluting coal-fired plants, which contribute more than three quarters of its power generation. It ranks as the world's No. 1 in nuclear capacity under construction.
Some domestic firms are also developing new products and equipment to increase the domestically-made content in China's nuclear industry.
Shanghai-based Baoshan Iron and Steel Co recently delivered the first batch of steam generator tubes used in nuclear power plants to its customer, making China join France, Japan and Sweden as countries capable of making this important product.
