Power use declines 12.5% in February
POWER consumption in China declined 12.5 percent in February from a year earlier to 337.4 billion kilowatt hours as factories cut back on operations during the Spring Festival.
The on-year change was distorted because the Spring Festival, a weeklong holiday, fell in February this year, but was in January in 2012.
In the first two months, power use rose 5.5 percent to 789.2 billion kWh, the National Energy Administration said in a statement today.
Power use by primary industries, which includes agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries, rose 4.3 percent to 12.8 billion kWh in the first two months while it jumped 4.2 percent to 552.8 billion kWh in the industrial sector. Power use in the service sector jumped 13.8 percent to 106.8 billion kWh in January-February, the NEA said.
Electricity consumption, a barometer of economic activity, may rise 9 percent this year, compared with the 5.5 percent growth rate in 2012, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said in January.
The forecast for rising power use was based on an improving economy and because of a relatively low base in 2012.
