Powering ahead
CHINA'S power consumption in the first quarter jumped 24.2 percent from a year ago to 969.5 billion kilowatt-hours, the National Development and Reform Commission said in a statement on its Website.
Coal-fired power output accelerated 24.3 percent in the period to 817.9 billion kwh, accounting for 86.2 percent of the nation's total power generation. Hydropower generation fell 5 percent due to the severe drought in southwest China while wind power production gained 99 percent to 8.17 billion kwh, NDRC said.
Coal consumption rose 17 percent to 864 million tons in the first quarter.
