Publicity week to boost green economy message
SHANGHAI aims to educate its residents and enterprises on developing a green economy during a publicity week, the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology said in a note yesterday.
During the publicity week which ends on Saturday, the city government is expected to sign a contract with the local branches of 10 banks to set aside 50 billion yuan (US$7.6 billion) for energy-saving projects. The banks can lend up to that amount to companies involved in energy-saving and environmental protection, with the invested projects being used as mortgages.
Shanghai has been adjusting its economic structure and upgrading the energy-saving industry. So far 4,208 energy-saving projects have been completed, saving 4.35 million tons of coal in consumption. Meanwhile 5,153 coal power facilities have been replaced by clean energy. There are 160 clean-tech and energy-saving companies in Shanghai, generating almost 100 billion yuan in gross sales annually.
By the end of 2015, Shanghai slashed the consumption of coal per gross domestic product to 0.463 ton, 25.4 percent below the amount at the beginning of 2011.
