Rare earths whistleblowers get reward

CHINA'S new rare earths group is stepping up efforts to crack down on illegal exploration and smuggling in the industry by offering cash reward to whistleblowers.

Once the Association of China Rare Earth Industry has verified reports of illegal exploration, smelting, processing and smuggling of rare earths, whistleblowers will get a reward of 50,000 yuan (US$7,850), a statement posted on its website said yesterday.

The Beijing-based industry group was set up in April as part of China's efforts to spur healthy development in the sector. China is the world's largest supplier of rare earths, a group of elements vital in the manufacture of products ranging from hybrid cars to wind turbines and guided missiles.

China has started to curb production and exports of the rare earths to balance the environment and conserve resources after years of rampant exploration. But the move has also triggered disputes with trade partners like Japan, the European Union and the US.
