Rio Tinto eyes rise for borates in Asia
ASIAN demand for borates will continue to grow strongly after tripling in the first 10 years of the century, said Rio Tinto Plc, as it opened a new technology center in China.
Borates may help promote higher standards of living and address energy and food shortages as China's economy enters a mid-cycle development, Alan Davies, chief executive of Rio Tinto Diamonds and Minerals, said in an interview yesterday in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, where the mining giant launched a US$4 million Asia Technology Center. The center will support Rio's expansion in Asia, the largest and fastest growing market for borates in the world.
Asia accounts for 50 percent of global demand for borates, said Liu Xiaoling, president and CEO of Rio Tinto Minerals.
