Seeking nod for project a major move

SHENHUA Group, China's largest coal miner, and Dow Chemical Co have taken a major step forward for their planned multibillion dollar coal-to-chemicals project by applying for government approval.

They have submitted a project application report to the Chinese government for approval to build and operate the integrated complex for coal, power and chemicals in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, the companies said in a joint statement yesterday. They added that discussions with relevant stakeholders are ongoing even as the two partners continue to advance the project.

The project will comprise dozens of units that include a 3.32-million-ton-per-year methanol facility for ethylene and propylene, which are used in the making of various plastics and chemical products.

"We believe the success of this project between Shenhua and Dow will be a showcase of great partnership between a leading Chinese state-owned enterprise and a leading multinational corporation doing business in China," Wu Xiuzhang, president of China Shenhua Coal to Liquid and Chemical Co, said in the statement.

The Yulin project will be the world's largest single chemical project, Shenhua said a year ago after a cornerstone laying ceremony for the project.

The two firms are still evaluating various aspects of the project, which are covered in the feasibility study, a Dow spokeswoman said.
