Shanghai buys energy to counter shortage
SHANGHAI faces the prospect of a power shortage in the summer because the city's supply might not be able to keep pace with soaring demand, the city's power supplier warned yesterday.
The city's power load is expected to reach up to 28.5 million kilowatts during peak hours in the upcoming summer season - up 7 percent over last year's, according to the Shanghai Electric Power Co. The city's current maximum capacity is only 18.7 million kilowatts, Shanghai Electric said.
The city will buy 8.9 million kilowatts from Anhui, Fujian, Sichuan and Hubei provinces as well as Chongqing. Shanghai will then be able to draw on 27.6 million kilowatts of power, leaving a shortfall of 0.9 million kilowatt.
The firm said in a press release last month that there could be a power shortage in some areas of the city during peak hours in the summer.
Construction projects that were halted during the World Expo last year have since resumed operations, lifting demand.
Factories in the affected areas might halt their operations during peak hours in the mornings to ensure power supply to households will not be adversely cut, the firm said.
