Tianjin Gas Group head snared in graft probe

China is investigating one more senior executive in the energy industry as a major graft probe that has brought down the former head of PetroChina Co widens.

Jin Jianping, chairman of Tianjin Gas Group Co, is being investigated for suspected “severe disciplinary violations,” Party disciplinary authorities in Tianjin said yesterday. Although they didn’t specify the cause, the phrase “disciplinary violations” usually refers to corruption.

Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities Co, a Hong Kong-listed unit of Tianjin Gas, said earlier this month that Jin had resigned as its chairman and director “owing to work reallocation.”

The 21st Century Business Herald said Jin’s investigation appeared to be linked to a probe into PetroChina, the country’s largest oil and gas producer. Citing an unnamed source close to the local authorities the newspaper said Jin had advance knowledge of the pending investigation and had attempted to flee China but failed.

“Some members of Jin Jianping’s family have already settled abroad,” the newspaper said.

China said earlier this month it was investigating Jiang Jiemin, former chairman of PetroChina and its parent company China National Petroleum Corp, for disciplinary violations.

That followed the official notice of similar investigations into four of Jiang’s former colleagues at PetroChina and CNPC.

Chinese media had also named Su Shifeng, a former executive of piped-gas distributor China Oil and Gas Group Ltd, a joint venture partner with PetroChina, as a target of investigation. But China Oil and Gas on Wednesday denied this.
