AT&S opens in Chongqing
PRODUCTION got under way yesterday at Austria-based AT&S’s new integrated circuit substrate plant in Chongqing.
Developed at a cost of 480 million euros (US$545 million), the facility is the company’s largest single investment in China.
Chief Executive Andreas Gerstenmayer said that production of IC substrates — devices that connect chips and printed circuit boards in microprocessors — is expected to become a major revenue stream for the company in the years ahead.
The factory employs 1,700 people, though the payroll is set to grow next year with the opening of a second line.
Mayor Huang Qifan said the opening of the plant “completes the chain” for the integrated circuit industry in Chongqing, as the city is now home to factories involved in everything from design and manufacturing to assembly and testing.
About 270 million electronic devices were produced in the city last year, and that figure is set to grow 350 million this year, he said.
