Alipay to boost tax rebate service
ALIPAY said yesterday it plans to extend its tax rebate service to at least three more European countries — Switzerland, Netherlands and Spain — as it seeks to consolidate the online payment market.
The company reached an agreement with global tax refund network Global Blue to cover more duty-free shops and retailers in Europe as the number of outbound travelers increases.
An initial pilot program to reimburse overseas shoppers the value added tariff paid on goods and services through their Alipay accounts was launched earlier this year for Chinese tourists traveling to South Korea.
Alipay and Global Blue started offering the service earlier this month to about 5,000 retailers in France, Germany, Italy, South Korea and the UK, and will expand to include other countries in the coming months.
According to Global Blue, Chinese shoppers are biggest spenders, shelling out on average 815 euros (US$1,395) per transaction based on their VAT refund processes.
The payment service affiliated to the e-commerce giant has been expanding its footprint to a number of offline sectors in an effort to boost synergies between online payment and department stores, convenient chain stores and public utility fees and consolidate its market position.
Users need to provide their verified Alipay accounts (usually bounded with a mobile phone number) on the tax rebate form, and they can also track the tax rebate process through Alipay’s smart phone applications.
