Alipay users allowed to Pay by Finger
MORE than 10 million Alipay users in Shanghai have been able to pay bills with only their finger tips.
Bio recognition technology operator Live By Touch and Alipay, the world's biggest third-party payment service provider, have launched the Pay by Finger service to allow Alipay users to pay by using one of their finger tips. The payment process takes five seconds, and no cash or bank card is necessary.
Nearly 10,000 stores in Shanghai, including Pacific Department Store, Parkson, Kedi convenience stores and Home Inn motel chain, have joined the Pay by Finger network.
Alipay users may apply for the service via the Pay By Finger hotline - 400-884-6868 - or by registering at designated stores.
Each user will be given a unique identity recognition code during the registration so that they could complete their applications at the Websites of Pay By Finger (www.paybyfinger.com.cn) and Alipay.
Alipay, developed by Hangzhou-based Alibaba Group, now has more than 200 million users globally.
"We don't exclude further cooperation with other bio recognition technologies," a source in Alibaba said.
Pay by Finger is a new technology for retail payment developed by Shanghai-based Live by Touch.
It was introduced in Shanghai at the end of 2007 when it was installed in some convenience stores. The company started to promote it in June.
The firm said the technology is safe as it was used for national security and military purposes before being used commercially in 2005, says Gary Chen, senior marketing manager of Live by Touch.
