Bank card transactions surge 37% in 2012
CHINA'S interbank card transactions surged 37 percent in 2012 from a year ago as public utility, travel and transport-related expenditure climbed last year, according to latest industry data.
The bank card-related transactions, including spending through point of sales machines at department stores and retailers, soared to 21.8 trillion yuan (US$350 billion) last year from 2011, China UnionPay said yesterday.
Last year, the overseas transaction volume jumped 30 percent as Chinese preferred to travel and shop outside the country, UnionPay said.
Over 10 million vendors and 1 million ATMs in 141 countries and regions accept UnionPay cards.
Adjusted for inflation, total retail sales grew 12.1 percent last year, below the 14.9 percent rise in 2011, the National Bureau of Statistics said last week.
