Bankcard holders gain confidence in March: UnionPay

CONFIDENCE among Chinese bankcard holders edged up in March with spendings on non-daily necessities rising, an industry report showed.

The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index rose 0.05 annually to 86.77 last month, according to a report released today by China UnionPay, the country's sole bankcard transaction firm.

New product launches at the beginning of the spring season and an increase in travel expenditure pushed up the index, China UnionPay said in the report.

The proportion of spending at department stores and shopping malls added 2.28 percent from a month ago and an increase in expenditure on hotels, airline tickets and restaurants also pushed up confidence.

The average amount of billings at supermarkets lowered 3.6 percent from the month-earlier period and seasonal fluctuations of general merchandise didn't have a large impact on bankcard holders' confidence.

The central government's continual efforts to boost domestic demand and curbing property prices will also have a positive impact on bankcard owners' spending in the long run, UnionPay estimated.
