Bankcard splurge

CHINESE bankcard consumers expressed their rising confidence in June by spending more on leisure, traveling and non-daily necessities such as jewelry during the summer holiday, an industry report showed.
The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index rose 0.61 from a year ago to 86.67, said the report released yesterday by China UnionPay, the country's sole bankcard transaction firm.
The index rose 0.14 monthly in June, the report said.
The Dragon Boat Festival and the approaching summer holiday boosted spending at tourism attractions and hotels.
The report also said that spending on jewelry gained 1.1 percent in June from a month ago.
