Brokers pace decline in Shanghai

SHANGHAI'S key stock index fell in the morning session led by weak brokerages, while gold miners and airlines gained.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.57 percent, or 15.45 points, to close at 2,673.08 points. Turnover was 72.2 billion yuan (US$10.9 billion), slightly lower than yesterday morning's 73.9 billion yuan.

The Shenzhen Composite Index went down 0.88 percent to 1,196.96 points.

Brokerages led the losers as the Shenzhen bourse stepped up measures to investigate misbehavior of listed-companies and brokerages.

Haitong Securities Co fell 1.5 percent to 9.24 yuan after receiving penalty for failing to reveal trading information for a listed-company it sponsored. China Merchants Securities Co lost 0.9 percent to 20.81 yuan. CITIC Securities Co went down 1.14 percent to 11.31 yuan.

Gold miners gained as bullion prices closed at a historical high of US$1,271.7 per ounce. Zijin Mining Co added 0.62 percent to 6.44 yuan. Shandong Gold Mining Co rose 2.38 percent to 45.26 yuan. Zhongjin Gold Co gained 1.58 percent to 35.31 yuan.

Airlines extended previous gains on positive market outlook for holidays and on speculation that stronger yuan may reduce companies' operational costs. Air China edged up 0.41 percent to 12.27 yuan. China Southern Airlines went up 2 percent to 8.15 yuan. China Eastern Airlines added 1.73 percent to 7.64 yuan.
