CIOs given bigger role in Chinese companies

TWO-THIRDS of chief information officers in China sit on the board or are members of an executive management team, according to a survey published yesterday.
The proportion is higher than the 53 percent recorded for the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, the 2016 Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey said.
“The role of the CIO is of strategic importance to a company’s development, they are not only focusing on IT and data issues, but are also providing constructive and innovative development strategies,” said Harry Huang, director of KPMG China.
The poll of 3,352 executives from 82 countries said also that 74 percent of CIOs in China felt their roles were becoming more strategic and that they had greater focus on digital strategy.
However, 69 percent of CIOs in Asia said they believed a lack of talent would prevent their organizations from keeping up with the pace of change.
About 39 percent of respondents said that they were given a bigger budget for IT projects last year.
The survey said about 19 percent of IT leadership roles in China are held by women, up from 5 percent in 2015.
