Changing economy brings jobs joy

CHINA’S employment market is expected to be bullish in 2015 with over half of employers planning to hire new staff over the next 12 months and China’s mainland likely to lead in terms of salary increases, recruitment agency Michael Page said in a survey yesterday.

In Taiwan, 63 percent employers said they plan to increase staff numbers in 2015. That compared to 53 percent for China’s mainland and 51 percent for Hong Kong, according to Michael Page’s latest salary and employment forecast for China.

“The outlook for 2015 shows there is steady growth in the labor market across the region,” said Anthony Thompson, the agency’s regional managing director. “With rising salaries and a talent shortage, employees will be the winners in the labor market in the coming year.”

The survey showed that the shift from a manufacturing-led economy to a service and consumption-led economy was having a positive effect on the labor market.

Innovative professionals who are good communicators and who can think strategically will be in high demand over the next 12 months, the survey said.

About 61 percent of mainland employers expect to offer salary increases of between 6 to 10 percent this year compared to 63 percent in last year’s survey.

Overall, salary increases of 6 to 10 percent are expected to be awarded by 48 percent of survey respondents.

The survey also found that junior professionals in the banking and finance sector are being highly sought after in Hong Kong for the first time since the financial crisis. Additionally, there is a need for sales and marketing professionals across multiple sectors, it said.

In Taiwan, a market focused on export-manufacturing, technology companies are increasing staff numbers. Designers of electronic goods and experts in research and development are in demand, as well as professionals in the retail and luxury goods areas.

The survey incorporates the findings of an online survey of more than 2,000 employers across China’s mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan along with face to face interviews with clients.
