China holds record for trademarks
MORE trademark applications are made in China than in any other country in the world, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) claimed yesterday.
The total for last year was more than 2.8 million, or four times the number made in 2008, it said.
China has “led the world in the number of trademark applications since 2002,” the administration claimed, without providing any comparative or source figures.
Liu Junchen, deputy head of the SAIC, told a press conference yesterday that China was registering trademarks as part of its continued efforts to protect intellectual property.
However, he said only a small proportion of Chinese brands are recognized in the international market as “Chinese enterprises still rely too much on cost advantages.”
The SAIC will continue to safeguard intellectual property rights and toughen penalties for infringements, he said.
