China set to boost central Asia trade

Trade between China and central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, climbed 13 percent annually to US$40 billion last year, an official said yesterday.

Trade between China and Kazakhstan rose to US$28.6 billion, up 11.3 percent, while that between China and Uzbekistan topped US$4 billion, up 58.3 percent, a Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said.

A trade target of US$40 billion has been set for China and Kazakhstan by 2015, and US$5 billion for China and Uzbekistan by 2017, according to Yao.

In a speech at Kazakhstan’s Nazarbayev University last September, President Xi Jinping proposed to establish a Silk Road Economic Belt, similar to the original ancient Silk Road of over 2,000 years ago, to boost cooperation between China and the central Asian  countries.
