Chinese firms lead M&A deals
CHINESE companies led merger and acquisition activity in the Asia-Pacific region in the second half of 2014 despite a slowdown in economic growth, a report said yesterday.
The companies sealed 781 M&A deals worth US$167 billion in the second half of last year, helped by several industry consolidations, especially in energy, mining and utilities, according to data provided by financial analysis company Mergermarket.
The Asia-Pacific region, including China, Australia, Japan, South Korea and India, contributed a total of 1,922 deals valued at US$313 billion in the period, up 24 percent year on year, according to the company.
Chinese oil giant Sinopec’s sale of its marketing arm for US$17.4 billion ranked the biggest M&A deal on the list, while a US$13.8 billion merger between trainmakers China CNR Corp and CSR Corp came in third.
