City launches China's first operating standards for jewelry stores

SHANGHAI is launching a non-binding operating norm for local gold jewelry stores, the first-ever service and operational standards for jewelers in China, to promote retail service standardization.

The new standards will become effective tomorrow (July 1), ante are not compulsory but aim to guide Shanghai gold jewelry retailers to enhance their service level and brand awareness, Tao Liangmin, director at the standardization team of Shanghai Quality and Technology Supervision Bureau, told Shanghai Daily.

"We hope the gold jewelry retailers will self-regulate their operations in accordance with the new standards," said Tao, who added that "customer satisfaction surveys will be carried out on regular basis."

The Shanghai Gold and Jewelry Trade Association began to draft the operating norms in 2010. The new standards announced today were co-developed by the association and a number of leading retailers in Shanghai, which include Shanghai Laofengxiang Co, Shanghai Laomiao Gold Co, First Asia Jewelry, and Chenghuang Jewelry.
