Demand rises for junior workers, survey finds

DEMAND for junior workers is rising as nearly 90 percent of surveyed companies said they plan to increase hiring in the third quarter, online recruitment portal 51job.com said yesterday.

A total of 88.5 percent of respondents said they will hire more staff in the third quarter, up nearly 10 percentage points year on year, according to the survey of 21,173 employers between April and June.

More than 70 percent of respondents said they plan to hire more workers with less than two years experience, according to the survey. They added they are willing to offer up to a 20 percent salary increase for customer service and production line workers.

Compared with the second quarter, demand for inexperienced workers rose 3 percentage points. Demand for middle management personnel fell 4 percentage points, the survey found.

“The value of middle-level managers is declining due to technology and frequent mergers,” said Jennifer Feng, senior researcher at 51job.com.
