Easier monetary setting
CHINA’S monetary environment eased slightly in May from a month ago as growth in money supply accelerated, but easing measures are still needed to bolster economic growth, the latest HSBC China Monetary Conditions Indicator showed.
The MCI, measuring the relaxation of monetary conditions, rose to -5.9 in May from -6.2 in April.
This is the first monthly rise since February, and HSBC viewed it as the first sign that monetary conditions may be bottoming out.
The increase of M2, the broad measure of money supply, accelerated to 10.8 percent in May from 10.1 percent in April, which was cited as one of the major factors for the easier environment, the MCI showed.
HSBC predicted a combined 2.5-percentage-point cut in bank reserve requirement ratio and a 0.5-percentage-point trim in interest rates for the remainder of this year.
