Firms urged to undertake responsibility
CHINA’S vast urbanization not only presents business opportunities to companies but also creates a host of problems that require the companies to undertake corporate social responsibility for the community, a forum hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai heard yesterday.
Jonathan Woetzel, director of McKinsey & Co, said companies need to be good corporate social citizens to help address these environmental problems which also open up new growth opportunities in dealing with pollution, rising land congestion,
Shortage of water and energy.
Chorching Goh, the World Bank’s lead economist for China, Mongolia and South Korea, said China’s rapid urbanization is an inevitable process to move from a middle-income country to a high-income country.
“However, pol icies that worked before may not work in the future, and we have seen rising problems resulting from the vast urbanization,” Goh said.
They made their remarks at the AmCham Shanghai CSR 10th Year Anniversary Conference held under the theme “CSR: New Pathways to Sustainable Urbanization.”
Kenneth Jarrett, president of AmCham Shanghai, said his organization has mobilized and led hundreds of American businesses in corporate citizenship and social responsibility by providing platforms for partnerships and sharing of best practices in the past 10 years.
“Looking ahead to the next decade of CSR in China, we will continue to find ways to strengthen our platform to promote CSR awareness and draw attention to responsible business practices that make a lasting impact in our society,” Jarrett said.
Also yesterday, AmCham released a 10-year report on its CSR initiatives in China that reflected evolving social needs.
