Flat week's opening for index at 3,109
SHANGHAI'S key stock index ended almost flat today after fluctuations as losses by brokerages soaked up gains by pharmaceutical producers.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.06 percent to 3,109.57 points. Turnover shrank to 131.4 billion yuan (US$19.3 billion) from 157.3 billion yuan. Losers outnumbered gainers 480 to 382, with 18 stocks unchanged.
The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks the smaller domestic market, gained 0.13 percent to close at 1,086.84 points.
Drug makers advanced after United States President Barack Obama declared the A/H1N1 swine flu a national emergency over the weekend. Shenzhen Neptunnus Bioengineering Co surged by the 10 percent daily cap to 14.51 yuan. China National Medicines Corporation jumped 6.8 percent to 20 yuan.
Brokerages were on the losing side. Citic Securities Co, the country's biggest listed brokerage, retreated 1.6 percent to 28.34 yuan. Haitong Securities Co lost 1.46 percent to 14.85 yuan.
Elsewhere, Gemdale Corp added 0.2 percent to 16.5 yuan after reporting its third-quarter net income increased more than fourfold from a year earlier to 482 million yuan.
Yanzhou Coal gained 3.3 percent to 20.36 yuan after winning Australian government approval for its A$3.5 billion (US$3.2 billion) takeover of Felix Resources.
