HK Bourse To Extend Trading Hours

THE Hong Kong stock exchange plans to extend its trading hours from March to maintain its competitive edge in the region.

Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd, the operator of the Asia's third-biggest stock market, will start to extend its trading hours from March 7 next year, the bourse said in a statement yesterday.

According to the plan, Hong Kong's stock market will trade from 9:30am to 12pm, and the afternoon session will run from 1:30pm to 4pm starting from March 7 next year. Furthermore, the lunch break will be cut further to one hour from 1-1/2 hours from March 5 of 2012.

The trading hours will be expanded from 4 hours now to 5-1/2 hours in 2012. The new HK trading hours are closer to the domestic ones, which are open from 9:30am to 11:30am and 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

At present, the Hong Kong market is open from 10am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 4pm.
