Initiative to link people to markets
FORMER New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley says the Chinese government’s plans to build infrastructure spanning Asia will help China’s economy transform to a consumer-led growth model.
Shipley, who last month was appointed to the board of the Boao Forum, sees Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative as a vital cog in pursuing the strategy of connecting people to markets.
“China is learning that if you put trade and infrastructure in place, and connect people to markets and markets to people, it leads to economic activity,” Shipley told Shanghai Daily.
Xi unveiled energy and infrastructure projects worth US$46 billion in Pakistan on Monday during a state visit.
In line with the strategy is the setup of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which has drawn 57 prospective founding members.
