Intellectual property court gears up for expo

ALTHOUGH the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court was launched just three years ago, it has already successfully dealt with 5,800 cases.
“We accepted 1,013 cases in the first half of this year, an increase of 26 percent over the same period last year,” said Li Shulan, vice president of the court. “One cause of the increase is that awareness of rights protection is improving. Another is the development of an environment which encourages and protects innovation.”
The court will also work with other local courts to prepare for the upcoming China International Import Expo.
Liu Junhua, a chief judge on intellectual property at Shanghai Higher People’s Court, said they issued opinions on judicial intellectual property protection for the expo last month. The document stipulates issues where extra attention is needed when ruling on cases like patent, copyright or trademark disputes, and lays emphasis on the protection of intellectual property rights among expo organizers and exhibitors.
