Ireland lands in Shanghai FTZ

THE state-owned Ireland's free zone operator Shannon Group today signed a memorandum of understanding with the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone to strengthen collaboration and combine the two parties specialty capabilities.

Patrick Edmond, group strategy director at Shannon Group and managing director of International Aviation Services Center, told an interview with Shanghai Daily that it's the group's expectations to offer more flexible and efficient customs clearance procedures in the future for both European exports into China as well as China's exports to Europe.

"We're very interested in attracting Chinese aviation companies to allow them to benefit from the geographical and business advantages with Chinese companies are also becoming more and more involved in global aviation," he added.

It also hopes to offer training for China's fast growing aviation industry with about 50 aviation companies are already operating in the region with many expanding and hiring more staff.

"Besides, we would also like to attract Chinese companies in the logistics and e-commerce businesses who are eying growth in European and American, and the MOU we have signed today is part of the framework that allows us to develop our contacts and relationship more in the future."

Meanwhile, Ireland expects to expand food exports to China as well. In a separate interview, James O'Donnell, director in Asia of Ireland's Food Board, said the country, well known for its seafood, dairy products, wine and whisky, is confident in quality and safety of its food and agricultural products.

"Ireland is a major food producing country, and 80 percent of what we produce is exported," he said. "We are committed to bringing the best food and beverage products Ireland has to offer to Chinese consumers."
