Job stability seen as vital in economic slowdown
JOB stability overtook career development for the first time in four years in China as employees aim to keep their jobs amid a slowing economy, a Randstad survey showed yesterday.
Although salaries are an important factor for job seekers, a slowing economy has prompted them to value stability over career development, revealed the survey, covering more than 8,000 employees on China’s mainland.
The survey found that only 26 percent of respondents were likely to change jobs this year, the lowest in five years.
George Wang, managing director of Randstad China, attributed the increasing emphasis on job stability to a slower economy and greater maturity of job seekers.
“In this year’s survey, we found even the young job seekers in their 20s are more concerned with stability over salary,” Wang said.
“The impact of the economic slowdown is felt more clearly by individuals as well as companies. It also showed that job seekers are more mature, as they looked wider than just salaries when deciding on a new opportunity.”
Job seekers identified pharmaceutical and chemical firms as the most attractive places to work at, the survey showed. Finance, information technology and manufacturing jobs followed from third to fifth spots.
