Macau gaming revenue continues to slide in July
MACAU’S gross gaming revenue in July fell 34.5 percent from a year earlier, recording 14 consecutive months of decline.
Despite the year-on-year slide, last month’s figure rebounded 7.2 percent from June to 18.6 billion patacas (US$2.3 billion), according to data released yesterday by the Gaming Inspection & Coordination Bureau.
Macau’s gross revenue from gaming in the first seven months fell 36.7 percent year on year to 140.26 billion patacas, according to the regulator’s figures.
The city’s Chief Executive Chui Sai On last week said that if the tally for July failed to reach 18 billion patacas, he would consider rolling out austerity measures to control the spending of government entities.
The industry’s actual performance was not so bad as to require the austerity measures, said the city’s Secretary for Economy and Finance Leong Vai Tac.
The city will, however, pay close attention to the factors underlying performance, and launch an austerity plan if the average monthly gaming revenue from casinos drops below the “red line” of 20 billion patacas, he said.
