More Chinese buyers at Malaysian fair
THE number of companies from Shanghai attending the biggest annual trade event in Southeast Asia held in Kuala Lumpur more than quadrupled from last year’s participants.
There were 43 Shanghai-based companies, making up more than half of the 84 companies from China taking part in the International Malaysia Trade exhibition and up from only 10 last year, according to Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (MATRADE), the government agency that promotes the country’s trade.
A total of 129 Chinese buyers come from the 84 companies, an increase from 65 companies which attended the exhibition in 2012.
“Now it’s not a good time for exporters because the demand in Western markets is not looking good. But it’s a good time for us to make some purchases overseas because we have a stronger yuan,” Zhang Yue, general manager of Shanghai Yuequan Industrial Co told Shanghai Daily. “I think there’s quite a large group here from China to look at the Malaysian food industry.”
International companies have also sent buyers from their Shanghai offices to the fair.
Bilateral trade between China’s mainland and Malaysia totaled US$47 billion during the first three quarters of this year, up an annual 8 percent, according to MATRADE.
