NZ film body eyes China
NEW Zealand filmmakers are being urged to take advantage of co-production agreements with China, which can give them easier access into the world’s second-biggest market, and also put a stronger commercial lens on their work.
New Zealand Film Commission’s Chief Executive Dave Gibson is in China for the Beijing Film Festival, the first time the government entity tasked with supporting the sector has had an official presence at the event.
While New Zealand filmmakers’ creative and scripting abilities are valued by their foreign partners, he said Chinese producers’ emphasis on earning a return on investment is a good lesson to adopt.
“The way in which they focus so hard on the commercial return on the film — we could certainly learn from that,” Gibson said in an interview.
The commission is actively targeting China as a market.
“China is a complete priority for the film commission, and increasingly for the industry,” Gibson said.
New Zealand has signed film and television co-production deals with China, giving filmmakers access to funding and incentive schemes in either country.
