Nearly 89% of firms to boost hiring

NEARLY 89 percent of employers in China will hire more staff in the second quarter of this year to meet their business needs, but workers should expect a lower rise in salary, a survey said yesterday.
A total of 88.6 percent of respondents said they are increasing head count this quarter, higher than 85.3 percent in the survey in the first quarter and 79.7 percent in the second quarter of last year, recruitment portal 51job.com said in a survey which covered 19,224 employers nationwide.
Nearly half of the new job demand came from first-tier cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
But only 30 percent of the respondents said they may raise salaries by over 5 percent in the second quarter, down from 50 percent who indicated in the same period of last year.
“Salary rises in China are not higher than surrounding countries now due to economic growth pressure,” said Feng Lijuan, 51job’s chief human resource expert. “Private companies are more inclined to raise pay for sales functions while state-owned companies and multinational ones will pay more for technology positions.”
More companies are also linking salary increases with their business growth.
