Plan to push for strong trader by 2020 aired
CHINA aims to expand trade relations with more countries and regions as well as raise the quality and variety of its exports to enhance the country’s competitiveness, according to a government document released yesterday.
“By 2020, China should have managed to strengthen its advantages in trading traditional commodities, and nurture some new strong points,” said the document by the State Council, or China’s Cabinet.
The document envisioned China to export a combination of products, services, technologies and capital by 2020 instead of mainly goods. Also, low prices and preferential policies will play a less vital role in trade. As its global heft grows, China’s voice in making rules for global trade is set to be louder.
China also wants to expand into new markets like Latin America and Africa.
In the first four months, exports to emerging markets rose 5.7 percent year on year, contributing nearly 170 percent to the export increase.
“Trade is an issue of great importance to China’s growth,” the document said. “We should develop from a big trader to a strong one.”
China is expected to sell more advanced products including communication equipment, railway, and machinery overseas.
