Service points for rural business

ALIBABA will develop e-commerce in China’s rural areas under its 10 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) investment to set up service points as the company focuses on lower-tier cities to fuel growth.

The Hangzhou-based company plans to use its service points — logistics facilities and delivery network — in more than 6,000 villages to ensure that the rural population has better access to e-commerce services.

The e-commerce company said last year that it would invest 10 billion yuan in the next three to five years to set up service points in as many as 1,000 counties to drive e-commerce development in rural areas.

Its rural service points now cover villages and counties in 27 provincial areas, and the company next plans to help 200,000 rural young people establish their own business in their hometowns. It also aims to lay the foundation for its smart village blueprint.
