Shanghai index ends three-days of gains

THE Shanghai market closed lower for the first time in three days with weak performance of steel makers and banking sector.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.21 percent, or 5.68 points, to 2,810.48. Turnover was 122 billion yuan (US$18.9 billion).

Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd has sold part of the H shares it owned in Bank of China and China Construction Bank with total worth of US$3.62 billion, Dow Jones Newswires reported today, citing an unidentified source.

China Construction Bank, the country's second largest listed lender, lost 1.43 percent to 4.83 yuan. Bank of China was down 1.27 percent to 3.12 yuan.

Crude for August delivery gained US$1.95 to US$96.89 a barrel in New York on outlook of rising demand. PetroChina added 1.19 percent to 11.06 yuan.

Metal producers showed mixed results. Yunnan Copper Co hiked 3 percent to 22.98 yuan. Zijin Mining Co lost 0.93 percent to 5.31 yuan. Shandong Gold Mining Co rose 1.04 percent to 47.45 yuan.
