Smog documentary boosts environmental shares

AS many as 14 environment-related companies listed in China saw their shares rise by the daily 10 percent limit in morning trading, after a former CCTV journalist’s self-made documentary sparkled controversy over China’s severe smog pollution.

The companies produce products used for air quality monitoring and air purification, as well as technologies practiced in tackling sulphide and nitrogen oxide pollutants. The new energy vehicle industry also got a boost.

Zhejiang Feida Environmental Science & Technology surged by the daily 10 percent limit to 17.12 yuan (US$2.76), while Hebei Sailhero Environmental Protection High-tech jumped by the same limit to 19.32 yuan.

The documentary was done from a personal standpoint of Chai Jing, a former well-known journalist at CCTV whose daughter was diagnosed with tumor even before birth. Massive debates have been triggered in China’s digital media platforms since it was released last Saturday, with netizens discussing topics ranging from China’s environmental issues to Chai’s own views.

Chen Jining, newly-appointed head at China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, praised Chai’s efforts and contribution in awakening public awareness at his first meeting with reporters on Sunday.

Chen said China will further inspect work of local governments and practice reforms in environmental protection by means such as increasing the level of information openness.
