Students cut salary hopes

JOB hunting university students in China lowered their salary expectations from last year but nearly half of them still prioritize work and life balance at the top of their career goal, human resource company Universum said in a survey yesterday.

They expect an average salary of 7,235 yuan (US$1,100) a month, 1 percent lower than last year, said the survey covering over 55,000 undergraduates, masters and PhD students in 110 top universities in China.

The survey found that 49 percent of the respondents consider life-work balance as a top career goal, followed by job security and stability.

A difficult economic situation has led to the lower salary hopes and pursuit for security in seeking a job, it said.

“Despite the tough job market, we still find that students from top universities in China are increasingly focusing on the overall working environment,” said William Wu, Universum China manager.

Aerospace engineering students have the highest expectations of an average 9,010 yuan per month.
